Sound Shore Medical Center (SSMC) is a 252-bed, community-based, teaching hospital located at 16 Guion Place in New Rochelle, NY. Since its founding in 1892, SSMC has served the diverse medical needs of the surrounding community and region. It is a major teaching affiliate of New York Medical College, and member of the Sound Shore Health System. Sound Shore Medical Center is accredited by The Joint Commission, the nation’s oldest and largest hospital accreditation agency with their professional orthopedic surgeon and orthopedic doctors. On its campus is the 150-bed Schaffer Extended Care Center, which provides 50 beds for short-term rehabilitation patients and 100 for long-term residents.

The Bariatric Surgery Program at Sound Shore Medical Center is proud to announce its 10th anniversary. It was one of the first programs in Westchester county and still remains one of the strongest. Dr. Silberstein and Dr. Maffucci will soon be performing the program’s 1000th case and are on the leading edge of surgical technique. They perform all three of the standard laparoscopic procedures as well as revisional surgery. There is a special bond between our patients and our program, thanks largely in part to our caring and knowledgeable staff. We look forward to another great 10 years ahead.
SSMC is designated by New York State as an Area Trauma Center, a Perinatal Hospital with Level 3 neonatal intensive care services, and Stroke Center. It is home to the Jacee Lynn Cappelli Diabetes Center-the only facility in Westchester dedicated to the treatment and education of adult and juvenile diabetes – all under one roof. It also features our American Diabetes Association accredited, award winning Adult Outpatient Diabetes Program. SSMC’s Advanced Orthopedic Institute features specialists in conditions of the foot, ankle, knee, hip, spine, hand, wrist, elbow and shoulder. The Institute’s highly-regarded joint Solutions Program is a wellness approach for hip and knee replacement patients – one that makes the steps easier. Our Center for Sound Aging features in-patient and out-patient services, including the physician Home Visit Program and our highly-regarded Adult Day Services Program.
SSMC is a Center of Excellence for Bariatric Weight Loss Surgery, as well as 1st Trimester Antepartum Screening, and is approved, with commendation, by the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons for the high-quality, comprehensive cancer programs – a distinction held by only 25% of hospitals treating cancer patients. SSMC’s Sleep Center has earned the highest level of accreditation from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.

Sound Shore Medical Center's award-winning Outpatient Diabetes Education Program proudly announces the recent certification of two of its staff by the National Certification Board for Diabetes Educators. Susan Rooney, MS, RD, CDN, CDE is a Registered Dietitian Educator who has been with the SSMC Diabetes Education Program since 2006. Ms. Rooney has recently added Certificated Diabetes Educator to her qualifications. Joining her in this new designation is Toyin Modupe, RN, MSN, CDE. Ms. Modupe started her career at SSMC in 2004 as a certified nurse's aide before pursuing her nursing degree at Hopfer School of Nursing. As a registered nurse, she returned to SSMC where she provided inpatient care until transferring to the Diabetes Education Program last year. Candidates for certification must meet rigorous eligibility requirements, including academic, professional and experiential criteria before qualifying to take the written examination. Achieving certification demonstrates that a healthcare professional possesses distinct and specialized knowledge necessary to promote quality care for individuals with diabetes.
